This week, we will practice our poetry analysis skills, learn and apply techniques to comprehend visual rhetoric, and will continue to build necessary skills and understanding for your upcoming photo essay. Daily assignments / lesson outlined on the weekly slideshow below.
Assessments this week: Reading quiz- Glass Castle pg. 1-125. Vocab & Remind Join codes are in the slideshow. Be sure to join the right class and use your regular name (or what you are normally called). Here is a list of the vocabulary for the next few weeks. All will be due 8/30 (program completed and quiz will be that day in class). The program exposes you to multiple definitions- these will likely be the ones on the test just to help you out.
Students took the summer reading assessment today and turned in the activity. If you are absent, we put a 1 in the gradebook to remind you to come in during AO to make it up. If there is a zero, it means that you did NOT turn it in and you need to put it in the folder by the end of the week for 10% off. After Friday, the most you can earn is half credit.
We started The Glass Castle. Students should read the first 15 pages tonight. If you do not have book, you can check one out at the end of the day. Journal: Take the perspective of the child, mother or father and write a story explaining "your" point of view of the incident depicted in the poem "My Papa's Waltz".
This was turned in at the end of the period. Upcoming: Next Tuesday 8/15: Summer reading assessment and activity due. You will need a copy of the novel The Glass Castle Today we used our Springboard books.
We discussed Reader's Response Criticism - perspective of all "people" involved in a reading. Looking at something from all the street corners. We read an analyzed "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke (pg. 9-12) If you were absent, make sure that you complete this classwork and come to us with questions. Once we do something in class, it could appear again on an assessment. -Underline key words - look at the connotation of the words Attitude - What is the narrator's attitude Shift - Note any significant shifts (time, speaker, tone, ect....) Theme - What did the author say about THAT? **We are having difficulty with the new Zinc reading program, so the article will NOT be due tomorrow. We discussed a technique that we will use: QHT Q- Question - I don't know or understand H - Heard - I've heard of it, but I still need more instruction T - Teach - I know this so well I could teach it Students reviewed vocabulary for unit 1 - on page 2. Read and did the activity on page 5 with aphorisms. Aphorism= a short statement, usually one sentence, that uniquely expresses an opinion, perception, or general truth. Due dates - please notice change in dates - Zinc article sign up and read by Wednesday - - Summer reading and assessment was changed to NEXT Tuesday 8/15. - You will also need a copy of the novel The Glass Castle by Tuesday 8/15 - if you can't get a copy due to a financial issue please let us know by this Wednesday and we'll make sure you have a copy.
