Monday -- A Good Man is Hard to Find + questions
Tuesday -- Read "The Fall of the House of Usher" and answer questions in class; HW; read your choice book Wednesday -- Finish Fall of Usher- HW: read your choice book Thursday -- Read "2BR02B" and answer questions in class; HW: read your choice book Friday -- Read "The Devil and Tom Walker" and answer questions in class; HW: read your choice book ( you should be at least 1/3rd through it) Short Story Test 3/28 Monday -- Finish Friday's reading (since we didn't finish in class) "The Ransom of Red Chief" & chart. If time allows, begin "2BR02B" by Kurt Vonnegut. If not, read it for homework. Just do a cursory read. Tomorrow you will do the deeper processing, but I want you to have a basic understanding of the story prior to that. Lots of symbolism in this one, so it takes more than one pass.
Tuesday-- Deeper dive into "2BRO2B" by Vonnegut in class; answer questions on handout and turn in. Wednesday -- early release day; Read "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin- it's only 2 pages with questions since the period will be short. Thursday -- Read "The Yellow Wallpaper" Annotating will help you answer questions so that you don't end up feeling like the character in the story. Finish for homework if you don't finish in class. Friday -- I will be out, but your sub, Mr. Hegedus, will take you for a "book tasting" in media center to sample books for your choice book read if you have not chosen one yet. ; choose book and have book in hand by Monday 3/18. Requirements: 250+ pages, American author, no movie. Audible is fine if you do better reading that way. You may not read your book on your phone. Monday- I will be out Monday also, but Mr. Hegedus will be there. He will give you your assignments for your Socratic Seminar groups. Please don't ask to change groups. You will have the period to work with your groups to prepare using the handout below to lead a discussion about your story. You may use online resources to help you be sure you get the analysis. (Sparknotes, shmoop, etc. are ok) When I return Tuesday we will have Socratic Seminar over 4 short stories -- "The Ransom of Red Chief," "The Yellow Wallpaper," "2BR02B," and "The Story of an Hour;" You will work with your group (divide and conquer) to create discussion questions based on the elements of the handout Mr. H will give you. Record the answers to the questions as well. Monday- Bring completed papers to class with highlighters if you have one. We will be working on editing in class.
Tuesday- Today we will be in the lab revising papers based on yesterdays editing. Wednesday- Final Papers Due! Finish Into the Wild. Thursday- Intro new unit / Harlem Renaissance Friday: Short Stories of the HR |
